Experience

Throughout this semester, I experienced the full cycle of an academic research project—from topic selection, literature review, and research design to data collection, analysis, and final presentation. At the beginning, I was unfamiliar with how to write proper research questions and objectives, but with the guidance from Ms. Yip and detailed in-class exercises, I gradually learned how to structure a proposal logically and use APA citation correctly. One of the most memorable parts was designing and testing two different poster layouts. This hands-on process made the research more engaging and relevant to my field of study. I also developed my skills in data visualization and learned how to write a clear and structured reflection report and presentation.

Observation

During the entire process, I noticed that even small differences in layout design can significantly influence users’ reading experience and efficiency. Through feedback from Ms. Yip and peer discussions, I observed that clarity, consistency, and visual hierarchy are key to effective design and research presentation. Moreover, the iterative nature of this course—constantly drafting, receiving feedback, and refining—taught me the importance of critical self-review and clear academic expression. I also noticed that many of my early mistakes were related to citation formatting and overly broad research questions, which improved over time thanks to structured guidance.

Findings

By completing all four tasks, I realized that good research is not only about finding answers but about asking the right questions and supporting your argument with evidence. I learned how to evaluate literature more critically and connect academic sources to my own project. The Likert-scale analysis in Task 3 helped me understand how data can visually demonstrate users’ preferences and cognitive responses. The final reflection task also allowed me to look back at my progress and see how each stage was interconnected. Overall, this course strengthened both my research thinking and design communication skills, and I feel more confident in handling future research-related assignments.
